Six persons drowned on Thursday in the Sabarmati river while enjoying a picnic at Galteshwar in Sabarkantha district, police said.
The pickiners, all hailing from Raslod village in the district, were enjoying their picnic near an ancient Shiva temple on the bank of the river.
"They decided to take a bath in the river but began to drown as soon as they jumped in the waters and died before anyone could rescue them," said sub-inspector K P Chavda of Prantij (rural) police station.
"A team of fire brigade and local police was sent to fish out the bodies. It took around two hours," he said.
The deceased were identified as Kamlesh Patel (22), Ankit Patel (21), Yash Patel (20), Chetan Bhatt (20), Vikas Patel (21) and Jayesh Patel (21).
The bodies have been sent for autopsy. Police have filed a case of accidental death and started an investigation.
