60-Year-Old Debt-Ridden Farmer Commits Suicide in Haryana

Rewari: A 60-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in his field at Guraora village in Kosli sub-division of Haryana's Rewari district, police said today.

Rampal took the extreme step yesterday as he was unable to repay his debt after his crop got damaged due to unseasonal rain, police said.

Village Sarpanch Rampat said Rampal had taken 27 acres of land from a landowner on lease but he could not repay the amount after his crop got damaged because of inclement weather conditions.

A programme to pay compensation cheques by Haryana Cooperation Minister Rao Narbir Singh to rain-hit farmers at Guraora today was postponed because of Rampal's death.
