75% turnout in phase 2 polling in WB

Voter turnout of 75 per cent was recorded in the second and penultimate phase of the Lok Sabha elections in 17 constituencies in West Bengal on Thursday which witnessed sporadic incidents of violence claiming two lives, while two voters died of sunstroke.

State's Chief Electoral Officer Debasish Sen said that 75 per cent polling was recorded till 5 pm although voting was still continuing in some constituencies.

"Barring some stray incidents, polling was peaceful," he said.

External Affairs Minister and Congress heavyweight Pranab Mukherjee's Jangipur constituency witnessed violence, with a CPM worker, Kashinath Mondal being killed in a bomb attack at Khargram.

"Mondal was attacked by unidentified persons as he was returning home after voting at a booth at Eroali village," Superintendent of Police B L Meena said.

IGP (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said that one voter was killed while eight persons, including three policemen were injured in the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency in Burdwan district when armed men opened fire and hurled bombs at a booth at Kanyapur leading to suspension of polling.

Two voters also died of sunstroke, one in Tamluk and the other in neighbouring Kanthi constituency in East Midnapore district.
