Lucknow: Eight people died and nearly 20 were injured in a collision of double-decker buses on Uttar Pradesh's Purvanchal expressway today. Three people are reported to be critical and have been referred to Trauma Center in Lucknow for treatment, officials said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief and said the state government is providing all possible help to the victims.
"The accident on Purvanchal Expressway in Barabanki is extremely saddening. I express my condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Along with this, I wish speedy recovery to all the injured. Under the supervision of the state government, the local administration is engaged in providing all possible help," PM Modi said in a tweet by his office.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also extended condolences to the families of the victims who died in the accident.
"The loss of life in a road accident on Purvanchal Expressway is very sad. Instructions have been given to the concerned officials for speedy relief and rescue operations and proper treatment of the injured," he tweeted.
The collision took place in Barabanki district, about 30 kms from Lucknow.
Both the buses were en route from Bihar to Delhi.
"The bus coming from Sitamarhi in Bihar hit the stationary bus from behind near Narendrapur Madraha village. Both the buses were going to Delhi from Sitamarhi and Supaul in Bihar. Police and rescue team are present at the spot," an official told NDTV.
The accident took place at around 4.30 am. Police suspect the driver was sleepy.
The injured have been admitted to CHC Haidergarh Community Health Center. Three of the seriously injured have been referred to Trauma Center in Lucknow for treatment.
