Gauchar: Hon. Flying Officer Satinder Singh is 50 years old. For the last 10 days, he has barely slept. In a month, he says, there will be plenty of time to rest - he retires then.

But for now, his focus is on the massive air force rescue operations in flood-ravaged Uttarakhand, a mission with an inexhaustible supply of instances of heroism and sacrifice.

Hon Flying Officer Satinder Singh, a gunnery officer, has been flying Mi-17 helicopters from Gauchar, the town that has turned into the hub of relief and rescue operations for thousands of  people who were stranded in remote areas, often without food and water, till soldiers reached them, by foot or by air.

"I feel proud to be here for this mission at the end of my long service of 38 years," the Hon Flying Officer Told NDTV.  "This is one the biggest relief operations that I have been a part of," he said as he stood in a green jumpsuit in front of the Mi17 helicopter.

He was brought here from his unit at Hindon in Uttar Pradesh. "My message to all air force warriors, is this - Do your duty. Sincerely," he says.
