A Narendra Modi controversy on Capitol Hill

A Narendra Modi controversy on Capitol Hill
Washington: In Washington, Narendra Modi was at the heart of a new controversy as Republicans denied inviting him to address a meeting of their leaders and Indian Americans yesterday.

NRI entrepreneur Shalabh Kumar, who is based in Chicago and has been lobbying in the US for Mr Modi, has been served a cease-and-desist letter by Congresswoman Cathy Rodgers, for allegedly misrepresenting her office and that of the Republican Party.

She is among a group of law-makers who say those organizing the event used their names and photos without their permission to make it seem like they supported the invitation to Mr Modi to address yesterday's gathering at Capitol Hill.

Sources close to Mr Modi say that he did not address the event because he is busy with the election campaign in India.

Mr Kumar earlier this year took a group of Republican lawmakers to Gujarat to meet Mr Modi. He told NDTV today, "The events speak for themselves. Congresswoman Rodgers was at the event today and everything went off very smoothly."

A group called Coalition Against Genocide which says its goal is to demand "accountability and justice" for the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat has complained that promotional material for the event carries the seal of the US House of Representatives, as well as pictures of the top leadership of the Republican Party.
