A New Learning Programme In Odisha Gives Children A Coaching Pump Up

A new learning programme is making tutions fun through enriching curriculum in Odisha.

Kolkata: In Odisha's remote villages, where quality education is a luxury, a new learning programme is making tutions fun through enriching curriculum which include games, song, dance and innovative text books.

At Sukhinda in Jajpur district, about 30 students of class 2, 3 and 4 crowd into a classroom of Learning Enrichment Programmes early in the morning for two hours every day before regular school. Similar classrooms are set up in many villages in two other districts in Odisha.

Budhi, a student of class 3 was all smiles. "Our books are lovely, there are a lot of activities and teachers explain everything," she said.

Many first generation learners in remote villages drop out of school every year because of lack of guidance and extra coaching.

Purushottam Shau, father of a class 4 student, said, "My son was struggling at normal school with subjects. But coming to these special classes has really helped him."

"Usually children don't want to go to school. But they rush to the special class every morning," he added.

Teachers at LEP are hired from the local community. An NGO, Aspire, trains them to teach. The entire exercise is backed by Tata Steel's Thousand School Project in the tribal regions of Koenjhar, Jajpur and Sundargarh districts.

N Yadiah of Aspire said, "Our focus is quality, the leaning is made fun and full of activity so that children don't even realise they are learning."

Biren Ramesh Bhuta Of Tata Steel said that the results were visible. "Children from tribal families from remote villages are coming to learn and staying the course. It is heartwarming."

The fee of the course is as good as free. Students like Subhalaxmi who now aspires to be in police many children are taught to dare dream of a better future.
