Kolkata: Former deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and BJP leader Sushil Modi today said that a pro-poor government would also have to be pro-business government for revenues to generate for the state.

"I think a pro-business government will also be pro-poor government. A pro-business government will be able to generate more revenues which can be utilised for helping the poor of a state", Sushil Modi said at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Indian Chamber of Commerce.

In an indirect reference to the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal, Sushil Modi said "a pro-poor government without being pro-business is of no use".

Stating that land was a critical issue in densely populated states like Bihar and West Bengal, Mr Modi said that availability of the input was a serious constraint.

Sushil Modi also urged both Bihar and West Bengal to work together for the Jagdishpur-Haldia pipeline to see the light of day.

He said that both the states would benefit from cheap natural gas which would be made available from the pipeline.

Sushil Modi also said that both the states could work towards developing a common Buddhist tourism circuit as Kolkata was the entry point for people coming from the Far East.
