New Delhi:
Former telecom minister A Raja has been permitted by a Delhi court to visit his home state of Tamil Nadu this week.
Mr Raja, who was released from jail last month, plans to arrive in Chennai on Friday; he has permission to stay in Tamil Nadu till the 30th. Mr Raja's constituency is Nilgiris.
Mr Raja is from the DMK, which was voted out of power in last year's state elections, partly because it had come to be associated with relentless corruption.
Mr Raja is being tried in a Delhi court for allegedly masterminding the telecom or 2G scam in 2008. He is accused of breach of trust by a public servant that carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Mr Raja allegedly sold telecom licences at below-market rates to companies he favoured. He gave them valuable spectrum or 2G airwaves for free.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court cancelled 122 of those licences that he had allotted.
Kanimozhi, the daughter of M Karunanidhi, who heads the DMK, was also jailed for her alleged link to the scam. She is accused of helping Mr Raja receive a 214-crore kickback through a TV channel in Chennai that is co-owned by her.
