B Chandrakala, the district magistrate of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, has over 4.5 lakh followers on Facebook.
Bulandshahr:
An 18-year-old boy was sent to jail and a newspaper reporter was sued - all for a selfie with an official.
B Chandrakala, the district magistrate in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr, had the police file a complaint against the teen earlier this week for allegedly trying to click a selfie with her.
The boy had accompanied the headman of his village to a meeting with Ms Chandrakala on Tuesday and reportedly tried clicking a selfie with the official despite repeatedly being told not to.
An upset Ms Chandrakala then pressed charges against the boy who was sent to jail. He was let off bail today.
The District Magistrate also filed a case against a journalist with the Dainik Jagran newspaper for publishing the story which her office said was an "insult" to the official.
Defending its action at a press briefing, a district administration official said, "The District Magistrate has over 4.5 lakh followers on Facebook but this does not mean anyone can dare to click a selfie with her. Under the law, a man can't even stare at a woman if it makes her feel uncomfortable. This sort of behaviour cannot be tolerated."
Vishal Singh, the additional district magistrate, said, "Everyone believes this program of taking selfies is wrong."
Dilip Avasthi, the editor of Dainik Jagran, however condemned the entire episode. "If a DM can jail a boy for clicking a selfie with her and then file a case against a reporter for writing the story, you can see for yourself how democratic she is," he said.
Ms Chandrakala had shot to fame in 2014 when
a video of her scolding officials for a poorly constructed road, went viral.
