AAP Government Wants Trams to Connect Old Delhi Heritage Sites

Trams started running in Delhi in early 1900s.

New Delhi:

The Delhi Government has decided to have a tram service in Old Delhi for better connectivity, Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said today.

The service - which comes as a part of redevelopment of the area - will cover Lal Quila, Jama Masjid, Digamber Jain Mandir, Sheeshganj Gurudwara, Old Delhi Railway Station and the New Delhi Railway Station.

Mr Sisodia, who made a recce of the area today, said the government has decided to "redevelop and take forward the cultural heritage" of Old Delhi - a task which he described as a "challenge".

To that end, one of the endemic problems of the area, traffic jams, need to be addressed. This is where the government hopes, trams will be of help.

Trams - regarded as an eco-friendly and cheap transport option that's widely used in Europe -- have survived in Kolkata and are set to make a comeback in Mumbai. In Delhi, trams, which started in the British period, ran till 1960s.

The government, Mr Sisodia said, has decided to carry out several development projects in Old Delhi through the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation -- a body to help conserve architecture and natural heritage of Delhi.

"No work was done after the corporation was constituted... Only planning was done and officials were paid," Mr Sisodia said.

To that end, the government has decided to make it a separate body on the lines of the New Delhi and Delhi Cantonment Board. The body will also be given powers to enforce its orders.
