AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal addresses a rally at Delhi's Jantar Mantar
Chaos overshadowed the Aam Aadmi Party's rally in Delhi today as a man committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree, as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other AAP leaders on stage appealed for calm.
"I am sad that he climbed the tree in front of us but nobody tried to stop him," Mr Kejriwal said.
The Chief Minister called Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government "anti-farmer and for the super-rich" and said, "A year ago, the people of India voted for the Modi government with a lot of hope and trust. What has happened in one year that farmers feel that Narendra Modi government is against them?"
Mr Kejriwal said his party would unite the farmers of India on three issues. "We won't allow land to be taken without their consent, we will ensure 50% profit on produce and adequate compensation for farmers."
The AAP chief said his party would fight against the land acquisition bill that makes it easier to acquire land for industrial and infrastructure projects.
Thousands of people gathered at Delhi's Jantar Mantar to protest against what they call an anti-farmer bill. AAP said farmers from Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Punjab, Haryana, Odisha, Bundelkhand and the Poorvanchal belt of Uttar Pradesh are participating in the rally to protest against the Bill.
AAP, which rules Delhi, called off a march to Parliament, which is in session, after being denied police permission.
In February this year, the Aam Aadmi Party trounced both the BJP and the Congress to win 67 of Delhi's 70 seats in Assembly elections.
