AAP seeks 10 days from Lt Governor; Arvind Kejriwal asks Congress, BJP to explain Lokpal stand

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal met Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung this morning and has sought 10 days to decide on staking claim to form government.

The one-year-old party has, in the meantime, written to the BJP and Congress asking what their stand is on issues on AAP's political agenda like setting up an anti-corruption body called Lokpal and electricity and water woes in the national capital. (Read: Kejriwal's letter to Sonia Gandhi)

Mr Kejriwal said the response of the two parties will be put before the public to decide what the AAP's next step should be regarding forming a government in Delhi.

Mr Kejriwal said these letters had been addressed to BJP chief Rajnath Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi; both parties, he said, have offered unconditional support to AAP to help it form government in Delhi. (Read: Kejriwal's letter to BJP president Rajnath Singh)

He pointed out that his party had sought no support from the big political parties, and indicated that he was wary of the offer. "No support in politics is unconditional", he said.

Last night, the Congress, which has eight seats in the new Delhi Assembly, wrote a letter offering "unconditional support" to AAP, to not "put an extra burden on the people." AAP won 28 seats in dazzling debut in Delhi and is the second largest party after only the BJP in a hung house.

The BJP alliance, which has 32 seats - four short of a majority - informed the Lt Governor earlier this week that it cannot bridge the deficit.

If AAP too refuses to stake claim to form government, fresh elections will have to be held in Delhi after imposition of President's Rule.
