Aarushi Talwar case: Won't give up, say Aarushi's parents to NDTV

New Delhi: Hours after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) closed the case of the murder of 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar, her parents spoke to NDTV to insist that they will not give up. Nupur and Rajesh Talwar, both dentists, say they are examining their legal options. (Watch: My daughter has been denied justice, says Aarushi's father Rajesh Talwar)

Aarushi was found dead in her bedroom in Noida in May, 2008 with her throat slit.  Her family's domestic help, Hemraj, was also discovered dead on the terrace of their home a few hours later.  A few days later, the Noida Police arrested Rajesh Talwar for the double-murder.  He was later released from jail after the CBI took over the case, and admitted that it had no evidence against him. In a Ghaziabad court on Wednesday, the CBI said it does not have enough evidence against anyone in the double-murder investigation. (Post your comments here)

"Aarushi may not be important to the CBI...but we will take it forward in whatever way we can" said Nupur.  "We thought the CBI would definitely be able to get the people who have done this to Aarushi," said her husband.

The Aarushi case shocked India not just because of the gory death of a young girl whose parents were at home when she was killed, but because of the expansive mistakes made by both the Noida Police and the CBI during their investigation.  Key evidence like fingerprints was destroyed because the police allowed civilians and the media access to the scenes of both murders.  Aarushi's vaginal swab was swapped, confirmed an expert at the forensic lab involved in the investigation.  And the murder weapons were never found. After Aarushi's father was released from jail, the CBI arrested three domestic helps for Hemraj's and Aarushi's murders. All three were put through narco-analysis but their tests did not provide any breakthrough for the CBI. Aarushi's parents were also put through lie detector tests.

"We are living on hope now," said Nupur, adding that she hopes the case will be re-opened.
