Accused Army Jawan Sent To 7-Day Police Custody In Howrah Minor Rape Case

Howrah, West Bengal: An Army jawan, who was arrested in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a teenager inside a compartment of moving Howrah-Amritsar Express, has been remanded in police custody for seven days by  a local court.

Monjiris Tripathy, who was arrested by the railways police from Madhupur station yesterday, was produced before the Howrah chief judicial magistrate's court and sent to police custody.

Tripathy, who is posted in Kolkata at the Eastern Command headquarters, had allegedly compelled the 14-year-old, who had boarded the compartment at Howrah station, to consume alcohol.

She was then allegedly raped by two other Army jawans inside the moving train. The other accused are absconding.

The girl was found from the compartment when the railways police personnel raided the train at Madhupur station. The raid led to arrest of Tripathy.
