A woman in Meghalaya was beaten with sticks by her relatives after she was accused of having an extra-marital affair. In a video that is viral, the woman is seen being thrashed in public by her family members at Dadenggre in West Garo Hills.
The woman, a single mother in her mid-20s, was asked to appear before a kangaroo court in her village. She was later dragged by her hair by four men and thrashed with sticks as the crowd watched the assault silently.
The police said that they have arrested six people, all her close relatives, on Wednesday within hours of the video going viral.
"While two people were picked up by the police from the village, the rest surrendered," Superintendent of Police Abraham T Sangma told the news agency PTI.
Santa Mary Shylla, an MLA who heads the Meghalaya Assembly Committee on Women's Empowerment, took note of the incident and sought a report from the police.
The State Women's Commission has also taken suo-moto cognisance of the incident and has sent a team to meet the victim.
