Acid attack on volleyball player in Rohtak

Rohtak: A teenage girl in Haryana, who is a state-level volleyball player, was hospitalised with serious injuries after two motorcycle-borne men threw acid on her while she was going for practice on Saturday evening, police said.

18-year-old Ritu Saini was taken to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) in Rohtak with burn injuries on her face and chest.

The men managed to escape from the spot after the attack near the crowded Prem Nagar Chowk, the police said. Rohtak is around 70 km from New Delhi and is the home town of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Ritu's family say they have no idea on who would want to attack her like that. 'She was going to practice when boys on a bike with acid in a glass bottle threw it on her," explained her brother Lalit Saini.

Senior police officers, including Rohtak district police chief Vikas Dhankar rushed to the PGIMS after hearing about the incident. But police are getting contradictory reports on the exact sequence of what happened. " Some eyewitnesses say two boys were on a bike, some say three. Some say they came on a bike, Some say in an auto. We are taking everyone's statement to get the real picture," said one of the police personnel. Police also say Ritu is not yet in a position to give her statement.

Last year, two motorcycle-borne youth had thrown acid on three girl students while they were returning from tuition classes.
