Actor Juhi Chawla, Shah Rukh Khan's co-star in many movies, played an important part Friday in helping with his son Aryan Khan's release from jail.
Juhi Chawla went to the Mumbai Sessions Court to stand surety for Aryan Khan and sign his bail bond of Rs 1 lakh. That meant she would be legally responsible if at all Aryan Khan failed to pay the money.
That process was crucial for the court to send release papers to Mumbai's Arthur Road jail, where Aryan Khan has spent 22 days. After signing the documents, Juhi Chawla obliged court staff with selfies.
"The main thing is - ab bas bachcha ghar aajayega (Aryan will return home)," the veteran actor told reporters afterwards.
"It's a big relief," she added.
Juhi Chawla, 53, was one of Shah Rukh Khan's earliest co-stars and the pair starred in many blockbusters.
The two later became co-owners of the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders.
Aryan Khan and Juhi Chawla's daughter Jhanvi Mehta had recently participated in an IPL players' auction.
Aryan Khan spent nearly a month in jail after his arrest following a Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) raid on a cruise ship party on October 2. He was "Accused Number 1" in the drugs-on-cruise case in which a total of 20 were arrested.
The case gripped the nation and divided social media as many questioned whether Aryan Khan's arrest, without the recovery or consumption of drugs, was fair. The anti-drugs agency claimed in courts that his WhatsApp chats proved his involvement in "illicit drug deals" and links with a foreign drugs cartel.
Aryan Khan's legal team, which included former Attorney General of India Mukul Rohatgi, argued that the entire case against him was built on WhatsApp chats that were old and irrelevant to the drugs-on-cruise case.
