Jorhat: An adult male rhino carcass with its horn intact on Monday was recovered from the flooded Kaziranga National Park in Assam, two days after another rhino was found dead.
The carcass of the rhino, drowned in Diphloo river due to the flood, was recovered near Siga camp under Agoratoli camp in KNP, sources said on Monday.
KNP Forest Authority removed the horn and deposited it with the Park's Divisional Forest Officer, they said.
On July 23, another adult male rhino carcass with its horn in place was recovered from the nearby Japoripathar village floating in the river near Mikirjan forest camp of the the park's Kohora range.
Meanwhile, five hog deer were killed by speeding vehicles at Panbari in the KNP area when they were crossing NH-37, towards the highland of the Karbi Anglong district this afternoon, officials said.
There are 16 animal corridors on the NH-37 through which various types of animals from the Park cross over to Karbi Anglong hills during floods, they said.
The rising water level of Brahmaputra river yesterday brought 85 per cent of the park's area under flood, submerging 117 of the 120 forest camps and snapped road connectivity leaving the country boats the only mode of transport for the KNP guards and others, they said.
Patrolling by elephant-mounted security forces in the world heritage site has been intensified for the purpose of checking poaching, the sources said.
