New Delhi:
The government's handling of Baba Ramdev's hunger strike in Delhi has given the BJP new ammunition which it's dispatching rapidly into the political battlefield.
"I feel this is political fascism," said senior BJP leader LK Advani. He has asked President Pratibha Patil to "not be a passive observer" and to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the Ramdev crisis.
Advani said the late night police action on Baba Ramdev and his supporters at the Ram Lila grounds "reminds me of Jallianwala Bagh."
Senior BJP leaders in different parts of the country said that the Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi must explain why Baba Ramdev was evicted last night from his camp in Delhi where 65,000 people had joined him in a demonstration against corruption. The police used teargas to force the crowd to disperse. The Baba was flown this morning to his headquarters in UP.
Mr Advani said that the cause embraced by Baba Ramdev - demanding that crores of black money funnelled to foreign banks by Indians be recovered by the government - is one that he has repeatedly pushed onto the national political agenda.
In Gujarat, Chief Minister Narendra Modi said the BJP backs Baba Ramdev and his movement. He also said "A saint is fighting corruption...in the dead of the night, atrocities were carried out against women and children...the PM is directly responsible."
BJP chief Nitin Gadkari has demanded an apology from the Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi and said that top BJP leaders will "sit at Rajghat 7 pm onwards for a satyagraha."
Gadkari said the BJP had asked for permission to stage its satyagraha at Delhi's Rajghat, but if disallowed, "we will still march."
