Afghan intelligence foils bid on Indian diplomat's life

Kabul: The Afghan intelligence has arrested two suspected attackers who were allegedly planning to assassinate the Indian Consul General in Jalalabad.

The National Directorate of Security (NDS) spokesperson Luftullah Mashal said the men were paid by a foreign intelligence service to attack the consulate in the eastern province of Nangarhar. Mashal said the agency had given the assassins, a car and weapons apart from the money to carry out the attack.

The arrests come on the day when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has arrived here on a two-day visit during which he will discuss terrorism, regional development and ways to step up India's assistance to the war-torn country.
