A protest against the Samajwadi Party in Gonda.
Gonda, Uttar Pradesh: A police officer in Uttar Pradesh whose sting operation appeared to expose the corruption of a minister has been transferred by the government, suggesting he has been punished. As chairman of the Sugar Corporation, KC Pandey has the rank of a minister. He is also the national secretary of the ruling Samajwadi Party.

Navneet Rana, the Superintendent of Police of Gonda district, a three-hour drive from the state capital of Lucknow, recorded a phone conversation in December where Mr Pandey purportedly asked the police in Gonda to accept a bribe of one lakh from a man he described as his close aide.

Mr Rana has been transferred from Gonda today.

In the phone conversation he taped, the minister allegedly asks the police officer to take monthly bribes in exchange for allowing illegal cattle trafficking.

Mr Pandey denies the charges but refused to comment on whether it was his voice heard in the taped conversation.

The cops have asked a local court for a non-bailable warrant against the minister. A decision on the warrant is expected soon.
