As news of the tragic death of the medical student at a Singapore hospital came in, the Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory, asking capital residents to avoid roads in and around the India Gate area on Saturday. Rajpath, Vijay Chowk, and many arterial roads around India Gate will remain closed.
Section 144 has been imposed in the parts of the capital. Rajan Bhagat, the Delhi Police Public Relations Officer, said, "Section 144 has been imposed in New Delhi District Area. All traffic is being diverted away from this area. Peaceful protests will be allowed only at Jantar Mantar and Ramlila Grounds. We appeal to the public to remain calm and peaceful."
Ten Metro stations, including Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk, Race Course, Khan Market, Jor Bagh, Udyog Bhawan, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road and Pragati Maidan will remain closed. However, inter-change facility will be available at Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat stations, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation officials said.
The traffic police put out a tweet early this morning: "Entire central Vista including Rajpath, Vijay Chowk and all road (sic) leading to India Gate will be closed for general traffic, Kamal Attaturk Marg also closed. All traveler (sic) advised to avoid these roads."
The case that has incensed India has led to a series of protests in Delhi, with demands for stricter rape laws, security for women, and greater accountability of government and law-enforcement agencies.
Last weekend, the anti-rape protests in Delhi turned violent and police used tear gas, water cannons and batons to combat protesters; an injured constable died on Tuesday.
