BJP leader Achal Sonkar seen showering money at a function in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal: After a politician indulged his dream of sleeping on a 'bed of cash', a former minister in Madhya Pradesh faces action for showering money at a public function.

BJP leader and former minister Achal Sonkar was seen showering cash at a public function on Saturday, as part of Eid celebrations.

Mr Sonkar was apparently showing his appreciation, rather lavishly, for an orchestra playing at the event.

Unfortunately for the 50-year-old, an anonymous complainant brought this to the Election Commission's notice as a violation of the model code of conduct ahead of state elections in November.

The poll panel has given the BJP leader 24 hours to explain his action. The poll code strictly bans gifts in cash or kind to potential voters, or spending more than 16 lakhs on a campaign.

This comes a day after the CPI (M) expelled its leader in Tripura, Samar Acharjee, who lay on a bed of cash withdrawn from his own bank account to fulfill a long cherished dream. (read: Tripura leader, seen lying on cash, expelled)

In footage shown on TV, Mr Acharjee, a contractor, was seen lying on bundles of currency notes. He was heard in the footage saying, "I have withdrawn 20 lakhs from my bank account and fulfilled my dream of sleeping on a bed of money."
