Local residents in Patna were joined by BJP leaders in their protest against the killing of BJP worker, Avinash Kumar Das.
Patna, Bihar:
A 40-year-old local BJP worker, Avinash Kumar Das, was chased and shot dead in Patna this morning, when three unidentified people fired bullets at him, leading to protests. The incident took place at about 6 30 am in the heart of the city's Kadam Kuan area.
The attackers, who were on a motorcycle, stopped the general secretary of BJP's Patna unit, Mr Das, as he was returning from his morning walk. They got down from the bike and chased him for a few hundred metres, firing at him too. When Mr Das fell down, one of them shot at him from close range before escaping.
The police have got Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage from a nearby temple and are probing the incident. "The footage shows three assailants chasing Kumar on foot. They shot him and he fell on the road. One of the assailants then walked up to him and shot him in the head. All the attackers escaped after committing the crime," said a police officer.
As the news of Mr Das' death spread, local residents came out on the roads to protest. They burnt tyres to block roads and were joined by BJP leader in their agitation, demanding the arrest of the attackers and justice for the victim's family.
BJP lawmaker, Nitin Navin said, "He (Avinash) was supposed to meet me today morning as we were to tour our constituency areas in view of the coming assembly polls. I was waiting for him when news came that he has been shot dead around 6.30 AM near his house."
Inside the state assembly, BJP lawmakers protested against the deteriorating law and order situation in the city, leading to the House being adjourned till 2pm. They have threatened to protest on the roads if the culprits are not arrested within 48 hours.
