Washington:
Did Rajnath Singh say "oops" in a thought blurb today when he began to speak, in English, at a conference on Afghanistan in the US?
The BJP president had made headlines just four days ago when he said at a function in New Delhi that the use of English in India had resulted in the loss of "language and culture" as hardly anyone speaks in Sanskrit now.
Mr Singh's address at Washington's Capitol Hill came as readers in India woke up to an Amul butter ad in newspapers this morning with the punchline, in Hindi: "English Hamaari Sanskriti Ka Hissa Hai (English is a part of our culture)."
The BJP chief's comment last week had provoked widespread criticism.
The rival Congress did not miss the chance to mock him.
When Mr Singh said he would raise the issue of Narendra Modi's US travel ban with Washington during his tour of the US, Union Minister Manish Tewari asked: "In which language - English or Hindi?"
Now we know.
