Unnao (Uttar Pradesh):
A day after a public reprimand from his father and Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today warned top cops of strict action in the event of any complaint of law and order issues in the state. The Chief Minister said that officers of the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) will now be held accountable instead of the junior staff.
"Constables and sub-inspectors will not be held guilty for law and order problems. Officers of DIG rank will be punished in such cases", Mr Yadav said, while launching Dr Ram Manohar Lohia village housing scheme.
The chief minister's tough words came after senior Yadav, at a function yesterday, rapped the former over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. "Akhilesh, the government is not run by flexibility, but by (taking) tough stand," the SP chief had said.
Accusing ministers and officers of tarnishing the image of the SP government by indulging in "sycophancy", he had asked Akhilesh Yadav to be a strict administrator.
"Ministers are indulging in leisure and officers in sycophancy to get their work done. That is bringing a bad (name) to the government... it won't be allowed," he had said.
As he enters his second year in office as chief minister, Akhilesh Yadav has had to deal with allegations of rising incidents of hooliganism and lawlessness, something that he had promised to wipe out from the state when he was voted to power with an impressive mandate by UP's electorate. The brutal killing of a senior policeman earlier this month underscored how far Mr Yadav is from delivering on his promise.
