After Olympic Silver, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana Vie To Claim Sindhu
PV Sindhu is the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal.
Hyderabad: Even before ace shuttler PV Sindhu reached the finals in the Rio Olympics, the fight to claim credit for her achievement had started. Claims are still flowing in. But the loudest came from the two Telugu states - Andhra Pradesh and Telangana - each of which were out to shower gifts on its very own athlete.

Sindhu's father Ramana is from Telangana's Adilabad. And mother Vijaya is from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh.

At a press conference after the semi-final, in answer to a query about the 'Telugu' girl Sindhu, her mother said she was "India's daughter" and the country is proud of her. ''Why call her Telugu? She is Indian first,'' she had said.

Andhra Pradesh has offered Sindhu Rs 3 crore, 1000 square yards in its upcoming capital Amaravati and the job of class I officer -- exceeding by far the Rs 1 crore limit set for cash rewards by the sports department.

The Telangana government topped it with Rs 5 cr in cash, 1000 square yards and the job of a deputy collector. In addition, the state has offered Rs 1 crore to her coach P Gopichand and another Rs 1 crore to Olympic bronze winning wrestler Sakshi Malik.

Others who have announced cash rewards since the ace shuttler created history, include the Delhi government (Rs 2 crore). Bharat Petroleum (Rs 75 lakh from BPCL).  The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a reward of Rs 50 lakh, the Badminton District Association another Rs 50 lakh.

Sindhu's fans have also got on to the 'claim credit' bandwagon - data from Google show Sindhu's caste had been among the most searched subjects over the last few weeks.
