Chittorgarh:
Eight men and 20 women have been hard at work at Akola village -- 80 km from Chittorgarh town. They have to deliver 10 lakh trousers by July - well in time for them to be worn on Vijaya Dashami, the 91st foundation day of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the ideological mentor of the BJP.
These men and women form the core team of a tailoring unit in Akola village, which has been stitching 50,000 knickers a year for two generations for the swayam sevaks of the RSS.
"After my father, I have been running this unit since 2000. From knickers to topis, everything is made here. The workers are paid Rs 50 per piece," said Jai Prakash, one of the tailors.
The RSS has decided to change out of its trademark khaki shorts to full length pants in March, following a meeting of its highest decision-making body, the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha. The actual change will happen in October on Vijay Dashmi.
The new trousers, coloured a dark brown, will be baggy, so the swayam sevaks can do yoga and Surya Namaskar.
The cloth - all 7 lakh meters of it -- is being provided by Bhilwara's textile mills, located close to Chittorgarh. The cloth will be dyed a dark uniform khaki at the Titan process house, located at a place called Chaudhawadi.
"The shade is a specific color -- a brownish khaki, and it is important that in the entire country, there is no variation in color," said Ravindra Kumar, the district head of the RSS. "That's why it is being dyed in one place in Bhilwara. From here, it will be sent to shakhas across the country."
