Guwahati:
One of the strongest critics of Narendra Modi, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has taken a leaf out of the Prime Minister's book to expand his digital presence ahead of the crucial assembly elections in the state.
With an Interactive website, Google Hangout sessions, a brand new WordPress blog, and hourly updates on social media, the 80-year-old Chief Minister is ready for the digital war with the BJP, which has used social media and digital platforms effectively since the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
His following is expanding fast: His official Twitter handle now has 27,400 followers, compared to BJP's chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal's 11,800.
Sources told NDTV that after the BJP won seven of Assam's 14 Lok Sabha seats, Mr Gogoi had asked his public relations team to analyse PM Modi's social media handle and come up with an outreach programme.
According to Assam Congress sources, Mr Gogoi's digital war-room is being supervised by his son, Koliabor Parliamentarian Gaurav Gogoi.
Gogoi Junior has not only planned a 360 degree digital convergence plan for his father's campaign, he has also hired professionals in Guwahati and New Delhi to help.
On Monday, Mr Gogoi launched a web portal for the Chief Ministers' Office, through which people will be able to interact with him directly.
"This is a platform for the people to air their grievances and get them resolved... and make the government more transparent and accountable," Mr Gogoi said after launching the portal.
The portal has a mobile and tab version and includes 60 features, including live web streaming and social media integration. Mr Gogoi will also launch his interactive App soon, which will run on all platforms.
His Google Hangout sessions - the first for a chief minister from the northeast -- have been an instant hit.
"We will be doing one Hangout a month. Later, we might increase the frequency. We had three so far. Youngsters are taking part," said Gaurav Dasgupta, who moderates the Hangout sessions.
Mr Gogoi's blog site on WordPress has been a big hit and he has been updating it on alternate days, sources added.
