Ahmedabad: Ahead of the Assembly elections in Gujarat, the Election Commission has asked the Narendra Modi government to transfer five IPS officers who the Opposition has accused of being close to the Chief Minister.
The officers that the Election Commission wants transferred include Himanshu Shukla, DCP Crime Branch, who prepared the final report of the Special Investigating Team (SIT) in the Gulbarga massacre case. The report did not find any substantial evidence against Mr Modi.
Another officer who the Election Commission has ordered to be transferred is AK Sharma, who heads the powerful Ahmedabad Crime Branch. He was recently appointed Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, before the model code of conduct came into effect.
