Hyderabad: On his way from Hyderabad to Nizamabad for his fast for farmers in Telangana, YSR Congress leader Jagan Mohan Reddy's convoy was today greeted by stone-pelters and also some pro-Telangana protesters. Jagan supporters and huge police presence dotting his route, however, soon managed to shout them down.
For the Kadapa MP, it was a repeat of what happened the last time he entered the Telangana region in May 2010. Then too, there were violent protests and much stone-pelting and Mr Reddy had to be escorted away by the police before he reached his destination, Warangal, as part of his 20-day Odarpu yatra. His yatra was aimed at consoling families of those who died in shock on hearing news of his father and Chief Minister YSR Reddy's death in a helicopter crash in September 2009.
The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and other political parties of the region have warned Jagan that he will not be allowed to sit in protest there till he clearly spells out his stand on the issue of statehood for Telangana. When Chandrababu Naidu toured Warangal district last week, there were clashes between cadres of the TRS and Mr Naidu's Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Mr Naidu too is seen as being ambivalent on the Telangana statehood issue.
But Telangana leaders of the Congress, the party that Jagan Mohan Reddy quit in rebellion and has kept on its toes ever since, has said it will protest against his visit. "Jagan has an anti-Telangana attitude. He never spoke in support of Telangana. He has tried to evade a clear stance on the separate statehood demand (by saying that the decision on it has to be taken by Centre). All Congress activists in Telangana should oppose his visit," Congress Lok Sabha member from Karimnagar Ponnam Prabhakar told reporters.
