Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam's brother O Raja has been expelled by the ruling AIADMK for alleged anti-party activities.
A statement signed by chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Mr Panneerselvam said Mr Raja, who was the AIADMK coordinator, was removed "for having acted against the party's principles and ideologies, and for bringing disrepute to the party."
The two leaders, in a short statement, said that Mr Raja has been sacked from all posts, including the AIADMK's primary membership.
Mr Raja had violated party discipline, the two leaders said, and urged AIADMK workers not to have any contact with him.
The move comes on a day when Mr Raja was elected to head a milk cooperative in Madurai.
AIADMK, welcoming the action, said it would not tolerate any indiscipline, irrespective of the person's status.
Senior AIADMK leader D Jayakumar said that the action against Mr Raja would serve as a warning to anyone who tries to go against the party, which was a "disciplined" organisation.
"It is a welcome thing that action has been taken by (Panneerselvam) despite Raja being his younger brother...this will be a lesson for others too," he said.
