An Air India flight from Silchar made an emergency landing at the Guwahati airport today after a major technical glitch occurred.
Sources say the nose wheel of Air India flight 9760 detached on landing; however, all 48 passengers and four crew members escaped without any major injury.
Initial reports reveal that the flight crew had announced that the landing gear had failed and had prepared the passengers for the emergency landing at the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoli International airport in Guwahati. The plane reportedly circled over the airport for a long time to burn the fuel in the tank to reduce the chances of it catching fire during landing under
emergency conditions. Captain Urmila Yadav was commanding the aircraft.
Aviation regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has ordered a probe into the incident.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi congratulated Captain Urmila and co-pilot Yashu for saving the lives of the 52 people.
Mr Gogoi spoke to Captain Yadav over phone and conveyed his gratitude to her and the co-pilot for showing alacrity, courage and dexterity by landing the flight safely.
"Hats off to you and your co-pilot for your daring and courageous act which saved the precious lives of the passengers," he said.
