New Delhi:
With the Egypt crisis deepening and Indians caught in the mayhem, Air India flew 300 Indians to Mumbai. Some passengers say that Air India has exploited the crisis, by charging them more than a normal Cairo-Mumbai fare.
Air India has responded to the allegations. Here is the statement issued by them:
Air India Ltd would like to clarify that it ONLY recovered costs and NOT made any "huge profits" as alleged/propagated by some quarters. The exercise, initiated in tandem with Government advise, was aimed to assist stranded Indian passengers in Egypt.
"Air India operated two flights to Cairo to bring back 534 passengers - including 46 children and two infants - to Mumbai on 30 and 31 January 2011," an AI spokesperson said while emphasising that the national carrier has always positively responded to such emergencies.
In fact, to make the Cairo operation a success, Air India had to withdraw one of its services between Mumbai and Cochin and reschedule its flights to Dammam and Jeddah, the spokesperson said.
Considering the ground realities and taking a humane view, Air India also ferried passengers who "gave an undertaking to pay the air-fare" on their arrival in India," the spokesperson added while highlighting Air India's legacy of always coming to the aid of passengers in difficult situations.
