Aurangabad:
In the wake of a massive landslide that practically wiped out an entire village near Pune in Maharashtra, a report has emerged that hints at a similar threat looming over the world famous Ajanta caves in the state.
The caves, declared a world heritage site attracting nearly 5,00,000 tourists annually, are situated in the Aurangabad district.
The report, sent to the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) way back in 2011, mentions how the hills nesting the caves have turned weak owing to exposure to the elements. Thirty spots have reportedly been identified that are placed directly above the 29 caves in the complex, which have huge rocks resting precariously. But in view of last week's deadly landslide, the report could prove to be a major cause for concern.
