Allahabad: Charging ruling Samajwadi Party with giving "open patronage to criminals", newly-appointed Uttar Pradesh BJP chief Keshav Prasad Maurya today claimed police "didn't wake up until central agencies sprung into action" after the murder of NIA officer Tanzil Ahmed.
In his maiden visit to his Lok Sabha Constituency in Phulpur after taking over his new role, he said, "We defeated the Congress in the Lok Sabha polls. For UP Assembly, we have coined the slogan - Congress Mukt Bharat Desh, SP-BSP Mukt Uttar Pradesh."
He accused the Akhilesh Yadav government of providing "open patronage" to criminals in the state and said BSP chief Mayawati is in "panic" as Dalits have seen through her "game".
"The political chicanery of BSP and SP, who have been ruling UP in turns for quite some time now, will come to an end after the next Assembly polls," he claimed.
On the attack on NIA officer Ahmed and his wife Farzana, he said the couple was sprayed with bullets on April 3, "but it appears the state police did not wake up until the central agencies sprung into action".
He said the state government seems to have become fond of announcing schemes without ensuring their implementation.
Mr Maurya termed Ms Mayawati "arrogant" and said her assertion that the BJP elevated him to the post of state chief to garner OBC votes, shows her "desperation".
"An ordinary worker can rise to the top in the BJP on merit. But in BSP, no Dalit has any hope unless he or she is a crony of Mayawati. Dalits have seen through this game and they punished Mayawati in the 2014 LS polls," he claimed.
He also underscored his party's reverence for BR Ambedkar saying the Narendra Modi government had last year held a special two-day sitting of Parliament to discuss his legacies.
"The Centre is making efforts to develop as memorials all important places associated with Ambedkar's life, including the house in London where he had stayed," he said.
"Our stance has been in sharp contrast to SP-BSP which believe in lip service to backward and Dalits", he said while mentioning the Centre's policies.
