Lucknow: A tide of national support has built around her, but the Samajwadi Party today ranted some more against IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal, who was controversially suspended last month by the Uttar Pradesh government.

"She should apologize. She did not do her duty... she destroyed the credibility of the cadre," said Ahmed Hasan, a minister in the state government that's headed by Akhilesh Yadav.  Describing her as "mindless," the minister then questioned her background.  "When we reveal which family she belongs to, then you will realize what are you supporting," he said.

The verbal abuse was delivered in the presence of the chief minister, who said, once again, that Ms Nagpal had earned her punishment. "Someone SMSed me last evening that my popularity has declined. Should the government do its work or not? The question is whether action will be taken against those who disturb the atmosphere of the state or not."

Ms Nagpal, the chief minister has said repeatedly, risked a communal riot by ordering the demolition of the wall of a new mosque being built partly with funding from Narendra Bhati, his party's candidate for the next parliamentary election from this constituency.

The chief minister has derided allegations that the action against Ms Nagpal is a consequence of her determined campaign against the local sand mining mafia in Greater Noida, which allegedly has powerful political patrons.

Documents accessed by NDTV today establish that in the days before she was removed as Additional Sub Magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ms Nagpal had sought the imprisonment of Omendra Khari, a close aide of Mr Bhati, on charges of cheating. (Read)

Mr Khari had defaulted on a two-crore payment for sand that he had bid for at an auction. The illegally-mined sand had been confiscated.
