All 6 accused in Sabharwal murder case acquitted

Nagpur:

In a major development, a Nagpur Sessions court on Monday acquitted all the six accused in the 2006 Professor H S Sabharwal murder case. The accused were members of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Reacting to the court verdict, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said that the decision proves that Sabharwal's murder was an accident.

"I have always said Professor Sabharwal's death was an accident," said Chouhan.

Professor Sabharwal was the head of the political science department of Ujjain's Madhav College.

He died on August 26, 2006, of lung and rib injuries after allegedly being beaten up by ABVP activists when trying to convince students about the need for postponing the college union elections.

His son Himanshu had sought the transfer of the case outside the state of Madhya Pradesh  as the accused belong to the student wing of the ruling BJP in the state.

Himanshu was also seeking a re-investigation in the case by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as he was not satisfied with investigation carried out by the state police.

In March last year the Supreme Court had transferred the case from MP to Nagpur.
