- Don't have state-of-the-art technology
- We import arms, equipment every year to meet emergency demands; Have nearly 40% indigenous equipment
- We cannot ignore security demands
- As per the recommendation of the CBI, we have blacklisted 6 companies 4-foreign, 2-Indian.
- Indian scientists have been able to make major breakthrough in certain areas- India has been recognised as a responsible military power
- On modernisation: We cannot take a decision in isolation. India has a sensitive security surrounding. We need to substantially step up our modernisation budget but there are constraints. Govt will have to balance it out. This is a difficult year for us. Finance minister is a strong man and so he is handling it and our economy is doing well, much better than others. There has been 18% increase in defence budget this year.
- Public sector is a very sensitive sector and we have to move very slowly. We have already liberalized export policies. Some countries are in a different list. We have not taken a rigid view. We are not able to meet requirements of our people. Once that happens, then we can export the surplus
- Our policy is zero tolerance for corruption. In the process of procurement, if we receive complaints and it is established- we will not hesitate to cancel contracts at any stage.
- All three chiefs enjoy confidence of government
- Whoever leaked the Army chief's letter to the PM is anti-national. It only helps our enemies. The issue was raised in Parliament yesterday- we have requested the IB to inquire. Once that report is received, we will take further action. We can't spare those people. Strongest action will be taken under Indian law.
- I don't have to reveal my feelings. My judgment will be based on facts. First let us inquire the leak. Indian army is still in Siachen and at Kashmir border. Don't demoralise them. You have to safeguard the prestige of the Army.
