Allahabad High Court prohibits use of 'lal battis' by Samajwadi Party leaders who hold minister of state rank
Lucknow: Following in the footsteps of the Supreme Court, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court today prohibited the use of red lights or lal battis by those who hold minister of state rank in the Akhilesh Yadav government.

The court, while hearing a public interest litigation that challenged the MoS status awarded to nearly 100 Samajwadi politicians, said that the politicians may continue as ministers till the time a final order is passed but cannot use cars with red beacons while the PIL is being heard by the court.

The PIL, filed by an RTI activist, questions the allegedly arbitrary fashion in which the Akhikesh Yadav government has bestowed ministerial status on almost 100 Samajwadi Party politicians.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court had ruled that only Constitutional authorities are entitled to mount red beacons on their cars, a privilege which guarantees right of way.

Constitutional authorities include the President, Prime Minister, cabinet ministers, governors, the Chief Justice of India, Supreme Court judges and the heads of both houses of Parliament.
