Dehradun: Three swimmers of the Air Force today launched an ambitious campaign to trace the stream of the river Ganga, swimming over 2,800 kilometres from Devaprayag in Uttarakhand to Ganga Sagar in West Bengal.
In a journey that will take 35 days, the swimmers will be supported by nine members of the Army and the Navy.
As part of the record-breaking effort, the team intends to swim almost 60 to 80 kilometres per day, pitching tents on the river banks at night.
Led by Wing Commander Paramveer Singh, winner of the 2014 Tenzin Norway National Adventure Award, the mission hopes to spread awareness for a cleaner Ganga.
"No one has even dared swim from Allahabad to Banaras alone. But we want to show the entire world that we in India are capable of accomplishing such tasks," Wing Commander Singh said.
