Dharamsala:
Four medical students have been found guilty of culpable homicide in the Aman Kachroo case, and have been sentenced to four years in jail.
In 2009, Aman Kachroo, a first-year student at a medical college in Himachal Pradesh was severely and persistently ragged by seniors who were allegedly drunk. On March 7, 2009, four MBBS students attacked him so brutally in the boys' hostel that he was rushed to hospital the next day.
The post-mortem showed that 19-year-old died of a brain hemorrhage.
The Supreme Court had appointed a committee to investigate the death, which confirmed what Aman's family had repeatedly stressed - that the teen had lodged a series of complaint with college officials, including the principal, that were ignored.
Kachroo's death led to the introduction of new guidelines at colleges across the country to protect students from ragging.
Aman's father, Dr Raj Kachroo, has fronted a campaign to combat ragging at colleges. "It's a historic judgement," he said today, "but for me, the matter will end only when all ragging stops." (Watch: This is a historic step, says Aman's father)
