Dharamsala: A fast track court in Dharmasala heard the Himachal government's plea for the cancellation of bail for all the four accused in the Aman Kachroo case. The court has adjourned the matter till August 2 and asked the defence to explain why their bail should not be cancelled.
Navin Verma, Abhinav Verma, Ajay Verma and Mukul Sharma, all charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, were granted bail on Saturday. The judge said as statements of all witnesses had been recorded and evidence collected there was no need to keep them in custody.
Nineteen-year-old Aman Kachroo died in March last year after the four seniors beat him up in his hostel at Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College, Tanda (Kangra) in Himachal Pradesh. Aman Kachroo was a first year MBBS student.
The public rage and media focus after Aman's death had led to the principal of the college, Dr Suresh Sankhyan, being sacked, and ragging being made a punishable offence in Himachal Pradesh.
Rajinder Kachroo, Aman's father, had expressed disappointment over the decision and said it is a matter between state and defence.
"Am not looking for revenge here. But yes, I feel that the defence is misusing the privileges given by the judiciary, which is what I am protesting.
They want the boys to be out and the case to drag on for 20 years. Instead they should just finish the trial. It is peculiar that the high court has taken cognizance of the case, hope it goes the right way. I feel so far the state has not done a good enough job of convincing the judge."
