Chandigarh:
Ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today described Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh's attempt to court arrest at a Dayalpura police station as a "political drama" aimed at getting sympathy of party workers by becoming something of "a martyr" in their eyes.
"It is also an attempt to save the office of Presidentship of state Congress Committee by Amarinder," senior SAD leader and party spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema said in a statement in Chandigarh tonight.
Reacting to the action of the state Congress Chief yesterday, Mr Cheema said Captain Singh must be aware of the facts of the case regarding which he was making such a hue and cry.
He claimed no false case had been registered and the one Captain Singh was referring to was in January this year, when Model Code of Conduct was in force in the state due to Assembly elections and administrative and police machinery was working as per the directions of the Election Commission.
The SAD leader said that everyone in Punjab knows that Mr SIngh is unable to digest the humiliating defeat at the hands of the Shiromani Akali Dal -Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combine in the January 30 Assembly elections.
"Now he is resorting to this type of political tamasha (drama) at a time when his own party leaders have approached their high command against him and his removal from the post of President is just a matter of time," he claimed.
Accompanied by a number of party workers and senior leaders, Amarinder Singh yesterday stormed into the police station Dayalpura in Rampura Phul in Bathinda district offering himself for arrest to protest against the alleged false cases slapped against the former MLA Gurpreet Singh Kangar and several others.
Captain Singh warned the Akali-BJP government that in case it did not stop the alleged vendetta against the Congress workers they will be forced to come on the streets. He said, despite the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's claims, several cases of vendetta have been registered in different parts of the state.
