Amarnath pilgrims pass through tense Anantnag

Jammu: Curfew is in place in several parts of the Valley as the first batch of Amarnath pilgrims make their way through tense Anantnag in south Kashmir.

There are two routes for the yatra. The one from Srinagar has not seen any trouble. But the second from Jammu goes through Anantnag, which saw protests on Tuesday, but is now calm after curfew.

The first batch of 1200 pilgrims began their yatra amid tight security arrangements despite violent protests in the Valley on Tuesday. Pilgrims said the deteriorating security situation will not deter them.

The second batch of 3,245 pilgrims also left Jammu base camp on Thursday for the 3,888 meter high cave shrine of Lord Shiva at Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas.

Around 3000 Border Security Force (BSF) jawans have been airlifted to the state to provide additional security, and the police too say they have made arrangements along the entire yatra route.

Commenting on the security measures taken by the government, DIG Jammu Range Farooq Khan said on Wednesday, "Adequate security measures are in place between international border, city and yatra route and where ever some kind of strengthening would be required that would also be done."

As many as 2.75 lakh pilgrims have registered so far across the country. The yatra would conclude in August.
