A cloudburst near the Amarnath cave in Jammu and Kashmir - a popular pilgrimage site - triggered a flash flood on Friday evening.

Here's what we know so far:

  • 15 people have died and 40 are feared missing, rescue officials have said.

  • The cloudburst was reported at around 5:30 pm.

  • Witnesses reported a sudden wave of water from above and sides of the cave after heavy rain in the upper reaches.

  • Several tents and structures like community kitchens have been damaged.

  • Rescue operations by the national and state disaster response teams and other agencies are underway.

  • Helicopters are being used to rescue people.

  • The police said the situation was under control.

  • The rain has stopped for now.
