New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party MP and former Indian cricketer Kirti Azad, who has repeatedly attacked Finance Minister Arun Jaitley over alleged corruption in the Delhi and District Cricket Association DDCA was summoned by party chief Amit Shah twice on Friday.
Mr Shah had reportedly tried to dissuade Mr Azad from making further allegations against Mr Jaitley "especially at a time when Delhi's AAP government is targeting Mr Jaitley for alleged corruption in the cricket body under his tenure as president," sources said. Personal differences, Mr Shah reportedly told Mr Azad, should not end up creating trouble for the party and the government. He also assured the lawmaker that the issues raised by him would be "addressed at the right time", sources added.
After the AAP press conference on Thursday, Mr Azad promised to make more revelations in a conference of his own, on Sunday. Mr Azad told NDTV, "I will hold the press conference on Sunday, as scheduled." BJP leaders say despite the assurances given to Mr Azad, there is no clarity on whether he will call off his press conference.
BJP general secretary Ram Lal was also present in the second meeting, in which he asked Mr Azad to show restraint. The opposition parties have used the charges to attack the BJP government, he told Mr Azad.
Mr Shah is said to have told the former cricketer that the charges against Mr Jaitley and the DDCA are old. The charges date back to 2013 when Mr Jaitley headed the DDCA and the UPA government was in power at the Centre. The Centre ordered a probe by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office under the Corporate Affairs Ministry but it had cleared Mr Jaitley, Mr Shah is said to have told Mr Azad.
