Andhra baby stolen, allegedly by burqa-clad woman

Hyderabad: An 11-month-old baby boy named Ajay has been stolen from a Hyderabad hospital, allegedly by a woman wearing a burqa.

Premier children's hospital, Niloufer, installed 16 security cameras just hours before the baby was stolen.  However, the police says that only 7 of the cameras were working, and were poorly placed, so the theft was not recorded.

Security guards have told the police that they  questioned a woman in a burqa with a baby as she left the hospital early on Tuesday morning.   She said the child was hers, and that she needed to get him some milk.

Ajay had been brought to hospital by his parents because their elder child was being treated for a severe kidney problem in the emergeny ward.

The family says a woman wearing a burqa befriended them, and helped them to babysit Ajay.  At 2 am, they realized the child was missing.  They say the woman had offered to take him for a walk, and never returned.

The police blames Ajay's parents for negligence. It also says the hospital  had not followed a key  security measure recommended by the police -  babies and mothers should wear tags that clearly identify them.

All over the hospital, now, posters have  been put up in English, Telugu and Hindi warning families not to let strangers near their children.
