Hyderabad:
A police officer in Andhra Pradesh stood out as an example for others in helping the needy. P Chalam, a Deputy Superintendent of Police from Kadapa, donated the organs of his wife who was declared "brain dead" following an accident. "My wife is dead. But she would still help others if her organs are donated to the needy," said P Chalam.
Chalam's wife, P Vijaya Gowri, was walking home on the night of June 19, when an auto hit her from behind and ran away. She fell down unconscious and was rushed to the government hospital at Kurnool. Doctors advised Chalam to shift her to a hospital in Hyderabad for better treatment. She was then admitted to the Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS). The doctors at KIMS tried their best to save her life.
However, unfortunately, she was declared "brain dead" on June 21. Though Chalam and his daughters were shattered by the news, they agreed to donate Vijaya Gowri's organs to the needy after being counseled by an NGO that coordinated transplants at the hospital.
Following the family's consent, Vijaya Gowri's kidneys, liver, and eyes were retrieved and transplanted on another patient just the night after, on June 22.
